The History of the Marktliege

A Place of Tradition and Change

The smithy in Erolzheim looks back on a long and eventful history. Originally founded as a blacksmith’s workshop in the heart of the town, it was a central part of community life for many decades. Horses were shod here, tools were repaired, and stories were exchanged – the smithy was not just a workshop but also a social gathering place.

From Workshop to Tavern

In 1981, the former smithy was transformed into a cozy tavern named Marktschmiede by Franz-Josef Straub. The original blacksmith’s chimney was preserved and integrated as an open fireplace into the new concept. Thus, the Marktschmiede became a place of conviviality and hospitality, blending tradition with a modern atmosphere.

Expansion into a Hotel

With increasing popularity and growing demand for accommodation, the Marktschmiede was expanded in 1991 with a separate guesthouse. The new building housed 13 comfortable rooms, providing guests with a peaceful and restful stay. This step marked the transition from a traditional tavern to a renowned hotel that welcomed travelers, businesspeople, and visitors to the region. The successful combination of historical charm and modern comfort made the Marktschmiede a popular destination in Erolzheim.

A New Chapter: The Marktliege

In 2024, the historic establishment underwent extensive renovations and redesigns. Under the leadership of its new owner, Mario Straub, a new and exciting era began with its renaming to "Hotel Marktliege." While the historical roots remain preserved, a modern and stylish ambiance has been created. Today, Hotel Marktliege stands for hospitality, quality, and a harmonious fusion of tradition and innovation.
